What You Need to Know: Temporary Layoff Variance Q&A
Do you have employees that are currently laid off? The “COVID-19 Emergency Layoff" period will end on August 30th. Join the Chamber for a Q&A to get your questions answered.
To extend a temporary layoff beyond that date, non-unionized employers must apply for a variance under the Employment Standards Act.
What does this mean?
• Without a variance, the employer-employee relationship is severed if the employer doesn’t recall employees on temporary layoff before August 30th
• Without a variance, eligible employees may be entitled to compensation (severance) for length of service under the Employment Standard act
